the ncaa tournament tipped off on march 18, 2008 opening round game in dayton, ohio, , concluded on april 7 @ alamodome in san antonio, texas. of 65 teams invited participate, 31 automatic bids while 34 at-large bids. 34 at-large teams came 10 conferences, big east tying own 2006 record 8 bids. 3 other conferences, big 12, pac-10, , sec, had 6 teams invited tournament. notably absent field florida , ohio state, champions , runners-up of 2007 tournament, first time both teams previous year s finals failed make tournament since 1980. kansas defeated memphis, 75–68 in overtime win third ncaa tournament championship, , jayhawks guard mario chalmers named tournament s outstanding player.

after ncaa tournament field announced, national invitation tournament invited teams participate. 8 teams given automatic bids winning conference regular seasons, , 24 other teams invited. field came 10 conferences, atlantic 10 having teams invited four. atlantic coast , missouri valley conferences each had 3 bids, , 5 other conferences placed 2 teams in tournament. last year s ncaa finalists, ohio state , florida both made semifinals, buckeyes winning tournament, defeating umass 92–85 in final. ohio state center kosta koufos named tournament mvp.
