1946: goes love

the house, built in second empire victorian architectural style, constructed on stage 12 in 1946 filming of turn-of-the-century period romantic film goes love. placed alongside victorian-style house built production, two-and-a-half story set utilized on soundstage shots in film.

1950s: on universal backlot

after production of goes love ended, both house sets put storage. in 1950s universal decided build new exterior residential street on front lot, , these sets taken out of storage , reassembled became part of river road; 1 of number of residential streets constructed in area. house seen in number of universal productions through 1950s (see list of appearances in film , television, below).

1964: munsters tv series

the house received famous make-over in 1964 when being redressed premiere of sitcom munsters. third-story octagon tower mansard roof , 4 windows altered covered widow s walk tented roof, second story center window given faux gingerbread gable, , chimney , crooked vampire-bat weathervane added. grounds equipped bare trees, dead leaves , stone entrance gate. after slight roughing new darker paint, house , grounds used exterior shots on series, interiors filmed on separate soundstages. original address house supposed 13 friday street, changed 1313 mockingbird lane in city of mockingbird heights, fictional suburb in california, before shooting began. after production of munsters in 1966 , film munster, go home house stripped of trees, gates , other landscape dressing.

after munsters

universal had replaced entire front lot , munster house among other sets relocated backlot on colonial street . although house used television movie munster s revenge close shots of windows , side garden exterior possible, stock footage previous 1966 movie munster, go home used long shot house had undergone several changes.

throughout part of 80s house renovated again , became more modern. notable changes removal of architectural details added munsters, including gingerbread gable on second-story center window , replacement of columns , railings of widow s walk tower. original first floor front porch replaced larger wrap-around porch.

the house fell state of severe disrepair , 1987 unable used original tv pilot of munsters today. stock footage again used munster, go home. house, after production had ceased on munsters today, appeared in many films , tv shows again – including burbs, dragnet , on tv series coach starring craig t. nelson.

in mid-2000s, second season of desperate housewives, second floor demolished , of remaining architectural details on first floor removed. new second floor constructed similar design, changing original mansard gable gambrel gable, reflecting more dutch colonial revival architectural style.
