after making entertainers china town (1962), ek raaz (1963), kashmir ki kali (1964), sawan ki ghata (1966) , evening in paris (1967) through 1960s, aradhana (1969) , kati patang (1971), samanta had entered phase of emotional dramas in career. nishi padma (night flower, 1970), nightflowering-jasmine, made arabinda mukherjee uttam kumar , sabitri chatterjee leads. when samanta saw film, impressed performance of uttam kumar, decided remake it. decided make changes in script. original film based on bengali short story hinger kochuri, written bibhutibhushan bandopadhyay, . title derives name typical bengali late afternoon snack, kachori, made of fried dough stuffed lentils, , hing (asafoetida).


the story first published in bandopadhyay s short story collection, galpa panchashat (fifty stories, 1956). stories had been adapted satyajit ray pather panchali (1955) , apu trilogy. shakti samanta asked mukherjee wrote nishi padma s screenplay write hindi version, ramesh pant, longtime-collaborator samanta penning hindi dialogues. famous dialogue, pushpa, hate tears though there in original, merely part of dialogue, samanta decided use great effect, delivered in rajesh khanna s trademark style. later both writers of film, won filmfare awards in respective categories.


casting

once script ready samanta approached sharmila tagore whom had done string of films, kashmir ki kali (1964), evening in paris (1967) , aradhana (1969) rajesh khanna. tagore found character pushpa, strong role in iconic mould of mother india , , instantly agreed, 1 of first films signed on after birth of son saif ali khan. role anand, actor raaj kumar samanta s first choice, believed khanna had become super star after hit aradhana, wouldn t interested in doing film focussed on female lead. however, khanna convinced samanta justice role. though, khanna changed character s name ananta anand draw connection character in hrishikesh mukherjee s critically acclaimed, anand (1971).


filming

the film shot in eastmancolor, entirely @ natraj studios in mumbai, including famous song, chingari koi bhadke, set on boat on hooghly river, howrah bridge of kolkata in background. earlier authorities in kolkata didn t give film crew permission shoot under bridge, crowd problem. song shot in water tank in studio, crew filming in knee-deep water. samanta has been using music directors o. p. nayyar , shankar-jaikishen, chose r. d. burman once again after kati patang (1971), laboured produce 1 of best scores, later in interview samanta recalled, pancham (r. d. burman) go room , work 9 o clock in morning till 9 o clock in night amar prem.
