the test done @ 1 , 5 minutes after birth, , may repeated later if score , remains low. scores 7 , above normal, 4 6 low, , 3 , below regarded critically low.


a low score on one-minute test may show neonate requires medical attention not indicate long-term problem, particularly if score improves @ five-minute test. apgar score remains below 3 @ later times—such 10, 15, or 30 minutes—may indicate longer-term neurological damage, including small significant increase in risk of cerebral palsy. however, apgar test s purpose determine whether newborn needs immediate medical care. not designed predict long term health issues.


a score of 10 uncommon, due prevalence of transient cyanosis, , not substantially differ score of 9. transient cyanosis common, particularly in babies born @ high altitude. study compared babies born in peru near sea level babies born @ high altitude (4340 m) found significant average difference in first apgar score, not second. oxygen saturation (see pulse oximetry) lower @ high altitude.
