william slater, son of john fox slater , grandson of john slater (samuel slater s brother , partner), born in norwich, connecticut. william a. slater educated @ norwich free academy, studied abroad, , later graduated harvard college in 1881. studied art history under charles eliot norton, , after graduating slater went on acquire notable art collection, including works rembrandt, , began lending paintings slater museum. slater married ellen burdett peck. slater worked in family s textile business, slatersville mills , jewett city mills. william slater served trustee slater fund. slater presented slater memorial museum norwich free academy in memory of father. constructed norwich’s “broadway theater” , sponsored various shows there. in 1894 slaters , 2 young children, william , eleanor, travelled around world in 232-foot yacht, eleanor, named after daughter. had been constructed @ bath iron works in 1893–1894. slater had office in boston, massachusetts , member of somerset club , tavern club. in 1900 slater sold village of slatersville, rhode island , mill within james hooper. slater died in 1919 , survived wife ellen, , 2 children william a. slater, jr. of norwich , eleanor halsey malone of new york. after death, slater s family sold remaining jewett city mills.
