much of housing of borough constructed london county council during interwar period of 1921-1939. major settlement of area, escaping slum conditions in east end of london, occurred during period when new motor , chemical industries such ford motor company plant @ dagenham set up. since decline of these industries in 1980s, employment has shifted towards service sector jobs. of borough within london riverside area of thames gateway zone , site of considerable house building , other development. £500 million budget has been earmarked redevelopment of borough s principal district of barking.
