lids
lids typically made sheet of plywood, although oriented strand board used. layer added on top of plywood. hardboard used replaceable , sturdy cover. homasote used because quiet , more comfortable walk on. occasionally, layer of muslin added on top of these materials, takes paint better other options.
framing
framing commonly made of nominally 2 x4 lumber or rectangular steel tubing, oriented longer dimension vertical, perpendicular lid. framing arranged @ or near every edge of lid. in addition, intermediate members (sometimes called toggles) added. common rules of thumb dictate lid should not overhang framing more 3 inches, , internal framing should 2 feet or less apart.
legs
wooden framed platforms use 2x4 legs, rest inside of framing, under lid, cleat supports framing. steel framed platforms built brackets affix legs made of steel pipe. when large numbers of platforms being used together, stud wall assembled support seams between platforms, instead of using legs @ all.
other
often, platforms kept in stock have coffin locks inset in framing or lids, in order fasten them adjacent platforms. legs or stud walls support platform typically require diagonal cross bracing, made of thin lumber.
