the gloire-class ships designed enlarged , improved versions of gueydon-class armored cruisers emile bertin. crew numbered 612 officers , enlisted men. ship measured 139.8 meters (458 ft 8 in) overall, beam of 20.2 meters (66 ft 3 in). gloire had draft of 7.7 meters (25 ft 3 in) , displaced 10,212 metric tons (10,051 long tons).
the ship had 3 vertical triple-expansion steam engines, each driving 1 propeller shaft. engines rated @ total of 20,500 indicated horsepower (15,300 kw), using steam provided 28 niclausse boilers. had designed speed of 21.5 knots (39.8 km/h; 24.7 mph). carried 1,590 long tons (1,620 t) of coal , steam 12,000 nautical miles (22,000 km; 14,000 mi) @ speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph).
gloire s main armament consisted of 2 194 mm (7.6 in) guns mounted in single-gun turrets fore , aft. intermediate armament 8 164 mm (6.5 in) guns. 4 of these in single gun turrets on sides of ship , other 4 in casemates. anti-torpedo boat defense, carried 6 100 mm (3.9 in) guns in casemates , eighteen 47 mm (1.9 in) hotchkiss guns. armed 5 450-millimeter (17.7 in) torpedo tubes; 2 of these submerged , others above water.
the waterline armored belt of gloire-class ships 170 millimeters (6.7 in) thick amidships , tapered 106 millimeters (4.2 in) towards bow , stern. above main belt thinner strake of armor, 127 millimeters (5 in) thick tapered 106 mm @ ends of ship. conning tower had armored sides 150 millimeters (5.9 in) thick. main gun turrets protected 173 millimeters (6.8 in) of armor , intermediate turrets 120 millimeters (4.7 in). flat part of lower armored deck 45 millimeters (1.8 in), increased 64 millimeters (2.5 in) sloped down sides of ship.
