stand-alone clubs

with competitions having merged together, , 6 nswrl premiership clubs having merged 3 new nrl clubs (st. george dragons , illawarra steelers; north sydney bears , manly-warringah sea eagles; balmain tigers , western suburbs magpies) competition became known first division , included these sides competing under original name , colours.


the inclusion of these non-nrl clubs (along return of newtown jets in 2000) in competition signalled move away reserve squad competition had become , became increasingly differentiated nrl competition games played @ non-nrl venues such north sydney oval, marrickville s henson park , western weekender stadium @ st marys.


another trend began during period phenomenon of nrl clubs out-sourcing competing teams, several nrl clubs choosing not field sides in competition , rather field either merged entities (as in st marys penrith cougars , balmain ryde eastwood tigers, both formed nswrl jim beam cup sides) or form agreements club take place in competition, players being eligible nrl selection, such agreement between newtown jets , sydney roosters 2006 season.


2007 expansion

in 2007, bartercard cup club auckland lions joined competition.


2008 expansion

in 2008 , 2009, jersey flegg cup club central coast storm fielded team in competition. team based on nsw central coast acted feeder club melbourne storm. in addition panthers replaced windsor wolves , sharks replaced cronulla-sutherland cobras. canberra raiders withdrew competition on 1 august 2007. newcastle knights announced joint venture central charlestown. team used original central newcastle rebels name. parramatta eels formed joint-venture wentworthville magpies act feeder club in competition 2008 onwards. saints decided no longer run reserve grade side, use st george district rugby league & illawarra district rugby league competitions instead feeder team/s.


2009 nsw cup season

two new teams have been added competition. these 2 new teams have both played in jim beam cup. shellharbour city dragons, known shellharbour marlins, st george-illawarra dragons feeder side. bankstown bulls, known sydney bulls, act canterbury-bankstown bulldogs feeder side. bankstown still field team in jim beam cup. manly-warringah sea eagles have withdrawn competition , have feeder team in queensland cup. newcastle has withdrawn competition, discontinuing link central newcastle rebels.


2012 expansion

season 2012 saw return of feeder clubs nrl teams st george illawarra , canberra. illawarra steelers, in partnership illawarra coal , illawarra leagues club re-entered team league, illawarra cutters. presently act feeder club dragons. mounties rugby league club entered nsw cup season , raiders feeder club.


2013 expansion



the 2013 season see wyong roos entering team in nswcup first time. not feeder team nrl team. 2013 first time in rugby league history teams names western suburbs , balmain not field team in cup, played wests tigers. there current state of ambiguity surrounding joint venture, , suggested both wests , balmain return 2 separate clubs once financial requirements met.


2014 season

in 2014 auckland vulcans replaced side new zealand warriors. penrith panthers returning competition in 2014, replacing windsor, remain in ron massey cup.





2016 launch of intrust super premiership

on 29th january 2016 announced intrust super had secured naming rights competition three-year agreement name have been decided not confused queensland-based competition intrust super cup.
