in 1877, donated $50,000 construction of library building , purchase of books in memory of father. library, known george bruce library completed in 1888 , located @ 226 west 42nd street , designed g. e. harney. building sold in 1913 , proceeds used build current george bruce library located on 125th street in harlem , designed carrère & hastings.


bruce made on 54 gifts astronomy, totaling on $275,000, between 1889 1899.


in 1887, donated george bruce free library. between 1889 , 1899 donated funds harvard college observatory (u.s.a.), yerkes observatory (u.s.a.) , landessternwarte heidelberg-königstuhl (germany), run max wolf @ time, buy new telescopes @ each of institutes.
