the first recorded rugby match in united states occurred on may 14, 1874 between harvard university , mcgill university. rugby grew in 1900 s, spurred in party american football s crisis of 1905-06 due perception american football violent sport. during era, rugby perceived having potential challenge american football dominant football code on west coast. @ 1920 summer olympics in antwerp, united states rugby team composed largely of players stanford university defeated france win gold medal. rugby union again included in 1924 summer olympics in paris, united states defeated france gold. despite success, however, rugby in united states largely faded away.


rugby began revival in united states in 1960s , 1970s, many colleges started club rugby teams. usa rugby, body governs rugby in u.s., founded in 1975. on 31 january 1976, u.s. national team played australia—in first official match since 1924 olympics—before 7,000 fans @ glover field in los angeles.


the united states national team participated in inaugural 1987 rugby world cup. rugby in u.s. received significant boost in 2009 when international olympic committee voted reinstate rugby summer olympics beginning in 2016.
