in 1493 croatian army suffered heavy defeat ottoman forces in battle of krbava field, near udbina in lika. ottomans advanced croatia, croatian population region gradually started move safer parts of country or abroad. in 1513 town of modruš, location of episcopal see in lika, overran ottomans. in 1527 captured udbina, leaving of lika under ottoman control. region became part of sanjak of klis , later sanjak of krka. devastation of lika , krbava such half century remained largely uninhabited. @ end of 16th century ottomans started settling vlachs in area, muslims in larger settlements formed majority of population. prince radic appointed prince of senj king rudolf in graz ( 1 december 1600). radic family native noble family lika region; members of family uskok military leaders @ headquarters in senj. prince of senj active against ottoman. ottoman rule in lika ended in 1689 recapture of udbina. borders between habsburg monarchy , ottoman empire concluded treaty of karlowitz in 1699. lika incorporated karlovac general command of croatian military frontier. repopulated immigrants ottoman held regions. catholics predominated in urban settlements, while orthodox christians present in interior of lika.


on 15 july 1881 military frontier abolished, , lika restored kingdom of croatia-slavonia, autonomous part of transleithania (the hungarian part of dual monarchy of austro-hungary). within lika-krbava county, gospić county seat. population ethnically mixed , in 1910 consisted of 50,8% serbs , 49% croats.
