rutherfordton alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established in 1948 or 1949, followed original us 74 route through rutherfordton, mainline us 74 placed on new bypass route through ruth. traversing along washington street , charlotte road, renumbered us 74 business in 1960.



shelby alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established in 1936 new primary routing using marion street through shelby; paralleling mainline us 74, on warren street. around 1949, us 74 moved onto new bypass south of shelby; us 74a extended on both directions. part of development, us 74a split west on marion street , east on warren street. in 1960 renumbered us 74 business.



bessemer city alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established in 1937, alternate route, along us 29a, followed old routing kings mountain gastonia, via bessemer city. year later, renumbered nc 161 , nc 274.



monroe alternate route 1

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established between 1945–49, set inner bypass of downtown monroe, via jefferson street. decommissioned in 1952 when us 74 moved out of downtown area, converting old route, along charlotte avenue , franklin street, second alternate route.



monroe alternate route 2

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established in 1952, replaced old mainline us 74 through downtown monroe, via franklin street , charlotte avenue. in 1953, rerouted along skyway drive when us 74 realigned onto new bypass routing between matthews , monroe. in 1954, decommissioned.



rockingham alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established between 1951–53, after us 74 rerouted south of downtown rockingham. alternate route followed old alignment along washington street , rockingham road. in 1957 decommissioned.



leland alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established in 1936, replaced mainline 74 through intersection in leland, while mainline moved off right on village road. @ 0.14 miles (0.23 km), shortest alternate route. unsigned throughout existence, marked on state , county maps until 1975, when ncdot downgraded secondary road status.



wrightsville beach alternate route

u.s. route 74 alternate (us 74a) established 1938 new primary routing, went causeway drive south along waynick boulevard, ending on south-end of wrightsville beach; making spur route of us 74. 1940, replaced extension of us 76.
