ayre began career pianist silent films in toronto. enlisted in canadian army private after outbreak of first world war. after, came attention of captain mert plunkett, selected ayre pianist 3rd canadian division concert party, known dumbells. ayre served dumbells until war ended, attaining rank of corporal during war. composed dumbell rag while still soldier; piece went on sell more ten thousand copies of sheet music.


civilian tours

after war, dumbells reformed civilian traveling band , variety show. ayre served pianist, musical director , conductor band. became first canadian conduct orchestra in hit broadway show, when served conductor musical biff, bing, bang @ ambassador theatre in new york. dumbells dissolved in 1932, ayre continued perform on piano in various venues until death.


toward end of life, ayre participated in reunion performance of dumbells in 1975 @ lambert lodge in toronto.
