tewson succeeded walter citrine general secretary of tuc in 1946, supporting post-war economic recovery of europe, , assisting in creating trades union advisory committee marshall plan. in 1949 secretary of conference @ geneva during international confederation of free trade unions (icftu) created, , served president 1951 1953. knighted on 14 march 1950. tewson retired general secretary in 1960, , in 1964 appointed member of independent television authority. died in letchworth, hertfordshire in 1981.
