the president of united states of america, authorized act of congress, july 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting distinguished service cross lieutenant colonel (air corps), [then major] glenn emile duncan, united states army air forces, extraordinary heroism in connection military operations against armed enemy while serving pilot of p-47 fighter airplane in 353d fighter group, eighth air force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on enemy-occupied europe while leading group of fighter aircraft on 11 november 1943. result of leading squadron of group against large number of enemy aircraft, lieutenant colonel duncan became separated group. observed enemy aircraft attacking bombers and, though @ unfavorable altitude , in face of overwhelming odds, lieutenant colonel duncan vigorously attacked enemy aircraft, destroying 1 , dispersing remainder. while proceeding home base, observed 4 enemy aircraft attacking straggling fortress. although gas supply dangerously low, engaged enemy , dispersed them, thereby saving fortress , crew. action of lieutenant colonel duncan reflect highest credit upon himself , armed forces of united states.
