whale @ north pole in april 1969.


on 18 march 1969, whale stood out of charleston on way north operations above arctic circle. reached north pole on 6 april 1969 , surfaced there in commemoration of 60th anniversary of rear admiral robert e. peary s 1909 arrival there. following event, completed mission under polar ice cap , headed south. after visit faslane, scotland, voyaged home charleston, arrived on 9 may 1969.


following 2 months of local operations out of charleston, whale sailed groton, connecticut, , post-shakedown repair period. after 3 months in shipyard of electric boat division of general dynamics corporation @ groton, started charleston on 16 october 1969. arrived @ charleston on 20 october , conducted local operations remainder of 1969.
