the 9th ward neighborhood thrust nation s spotlight in aftermath of 2005 s hurricane katrina. of area on both sides of industrial canal experienced catastrophic flooding. majority of damage caused storm surge. there multiple severe levee breaks along both mrgo , industrial canal.


eastern new orleans flooded multiple sources. severe due multiple breaches in mrgo south. heavy waves during storm topped lake levee north, may have contributed flooding in places. lakefront airport, outside main protection levees, heavily damaged surge lake pontchartrain. water overtopped section of industrial canal levee. of eastern new orleans experienced flooding, areas except gentilly/chef menteur ridge , michoud areas.


the upper ninth flooded levee , floodwall failures near desire neighborhood, across industrial canal junction mrgo. flooding in part of ward joined of bulk of city s east bank west, water flowing in london avenue canal breaches. old high ground of section of bywater on mississippi river side of st. claude avenue substantial neighborhood escape significant flooding. few areas on highest part of gentilly ridge , along lakefront fill above floodwaters.


the lower ninth ward flooded catastrophically, storm surge coming through 2 large breaches in industrial canal flood protection system, creating violent currents not flooded buildings, smashed them , displaced them foundations. floodwaters propelled barge ing 4727 neighborhood on other side of levee industrial canal.


during several days of hurricane aftermath, live television news coverage reporters , anchors had little familiarity new orleans included misinformation, such referring lower 9th ward 9th ward , misidentifying helicopter shots of industrial canal breach 17th street canal breach (which @ opposite end of city.)


the lower 9th ward, not yet dry katrina, re-flooded hurricane rita month later.


during mardi gras 2006, 9th ward popular spot visitors. national attention area received due hurricane , events following disaster provided carnival revelers additional destination during celebration. visitors, however, not ones venture area. locals flocked devastated neighborhoods of ward well. hundreds of people gathered near florida housing project in ninth ward on fat tuesday. in quasi-celebratory spirit of jazz funeral, many residents made first trip take part in massive block party in former neighborhood.

since katrina, 9th ward has witnessed uneven resurgence, vietnamese community in new orleans east establishing dining destination , commercial hub, vietnamese , other fishermen further down parish suffering deepwater horizon oil spill of april 20, 2010 , despite projected shuttering of nasa s michaud facility retirement of current space shuttle fleet.


roads in 9th ward continue improve. streets neglected years in predominantly african-american ward before katrina have been resurfaced, such st. claude avenue , poland avenue, chartres street , parts of desire street, numerous smaller neighborhood roads remain patchwork of potholes , uneven dips , humps.


as of january 1, 2011, fema trailers rare in 9th ward, although persist. on streets, block-by-block resurgence of owner-occupancy has taken place, on others, particularly north of galvez , parts of lower 9th ward north of claiborne ave., large swaths of land vacant fields. unoccupied, blighted houses structures remaining on blocks, on decade after flooding engulfed region.
