biography
early , personal life

ziade born lebanese maronite father (from chahtoul family) , palestinian mother in nazareth, palestine. father, elias ziade, editor of al-mahrūsah.


ziade attended primary school in nazareth. father came kesrouan region of mount lebanon, @ 14 years of age sent aintoura pursue secondary studies @ french convent school girls. studies in aintoura had exposed french literature, , romantic literature, took particular liking. attended several roman catholic schools in lebanon , in 1904, returned nazareth parents. reported have published first articles @ age 16.


ziade never married, had relationship 1 of arab literary greats of twentieth century, lebanese-american poet , writer, khalil gibran. although pair never met, maintained written correspondence until gibran s death in 1931.


between 1928 , 1932, ziade suffered series of personal losses, beginning death of parents, friends, , above khalil gibran. fell deep depression , returned lebanon relatives placed in psychiatric hospital gain control on estate. nawal el saadawi submits ziade sent hospital expressing feminist sentiments. ziyadah profoundly humiliated , incensed decision; ziade recovered , left after medical report proved of sound mental health. returned cairo died on october 17, 1941.

in 1908, , family emigrated egypt. father founded al mahroussah newspaper while family in egypt, ziade contributed number of articles.


ziade particularly interested in learning languages, studying privately @ home coupled french-catholic education, , studying @ local university modern languages degree while in egypt. result, ziade bilingual in arabic , french, , had working knowledge of english, italian, german, spanish, latin modern greek. graduated in 1917.


key arab literary figure

ziade known in arab literary circles, receiving many male , female writers , intellectuals @ literary salon established in 1912. among frequented salon taha hussein, khalil moutrane, ahmed lutfi el-sayed, antoun gemayel, walieddine yakan, abbas el-akkad , yacoub sarrouf.


though never married, 1912 onward, maintained extensive written correspondence khalil gibran. while never met living in new york city, correspondence lasted 19 years until death in 1931, , ziade credited introducing work egyptian public.
