on 15 may 2015, brief, single radio signal @ 11 ghz (2.7 cm wavelength) observed in direction of hd 164595 team led n. n. bursov involving claudio maccone @ ratan-600 radio observatory. signal may due terrestrial radio-frequency interference or gravitational lensing more distant source. observed once (for 2 seconds), single team, @ single telescope, giving rio scale score of 1 (insignificant) or 2 (low). discussions in media 29 august 2016 onwards featured speculation signal caused isotropic beacon type ii civilization.

the senior astronomer of seti institute, seth shostak, stated confirmation telescope required. astronomer nicholas suntzeff of texas a&m university stated signal in military frequency band, , have been satellite downlink, implying such systems may kept secret , therefore unknown seti scientists.

seti , meti studies followed allen telescope array , boquete optical seti observatory. also, scientists @ berkeley seti research center @ university of california, berkeley observed hd 164595 using green bank telescope part of breakthrough listen program. no signal detected @ position , frequency of transient reported ratan group.
