the protestant reformation reached pomerania in 16th century. bogislaw x in 1518 sent son, barnim ix, study in wittenberg. in 1521, attended mass of martin luther in wittenberg, , of other reformed preachers in following years. in 1521, johannes bugenhagen, important person in following conversion of pomerania protestantism, left belbuck abbey study in wittenberg, close luther. in belbuck, circle had formed before, comprising not bugenhagen, johann boldewan, christian ketelhut, andreas knöpke , johannes kureke. these persons, , johannes knipstro, paul vom rode, peter suawe, jacob hogensee , johann amandus spread protestant idea on pomerania. @ several occasions, went along public outrage, plunder , arson directed against church.


the dukes role in reformation process ambitious. bogislaw x, despite sympathies, forbade protestant preaching , tumults shortly before death. of sons, george opposed, , barnim ix supported protestantism did georg s son, philip i. in 1531, george died, , landtag in stettin formally allowed protestant preaching, if no tumults arise this. on december 13, 1534, landtag assembled in treptow der rega, dukes , nobility against vote of cammin bishop erasmus von manteuffel officially introduced protestantism pomerania. bugenhagen in following month drafted new church order.


the duchy of pomerania joined schmalkaldic league, did not actively participate in schmalkaldic war.
