kerala has unique position in india 1 of politicised states. has nation s largest politically aware population, actively participates in state politics.


politics in kerala dominated 2 political fronts: cpi(m)led left democratic front (ldf) , indian national congress-led united democratic front (udf) since late 1970s. these 2 coalitions have alternated in power since 1982. according 2016 kerala legislative assembly election, ldf has majority in state assembly (92/140).


the political alliance has stabilised and, rare exceptions, of coalition partners maintain loyalty alliance. result of this, power has alternated between these 2 fronts since 1979.


in terms of individual parties, state has strong leanings towards socialism , communist parties have made strong inroads in kerala. malabar region, particularly kannur , palakkad, considered heartland of communist parties. kollam , alapuzha districts, trade unions have strong presence, inclined left parties, though several times udf has won. cpi(m) led ldf did clean sweep of 11-0 on udf , nda in kollam district during 2016 local body election. largest communist party cpim , second largest cpi.


the indian national congress, leads udf coalition, has had strong presence in kerala since pre-independence days. congress party has great popularity in thrissur, ernakulam , thiruvananthapuram regions.

the kerala congress, has more 4 denominations after breaking away original party. has strong influence among settlement populations in hilly regions. various kerala congress denominations patronized syrian christian community , nair populations, in central travancore areas kottayam, idukki , pathanamthitta. today, of kerala congress parties udf.
the indian union muslim league powerful pro-muslim community-oriented party, started muslim league prior independence, yet decided transfer allegiance indian union after independence, when original muslim league went pakistan. iuml-kerala unit muslim league group declare allegiance , loyalty india , hence become state party in post-independence india. party has strongholds in muslim-dominated districts kozhikode, malappuram , kasargod. form second largest party within udf.
socialist groups, consisting of several small fragmented parties ncp, sjd-s, jds, , congress-s, centre-left socialist parties having limited influence in few pocket areas. of socialist groups ldf, though in few instances, of them changed loyalties udf.
communist parties consist of various groups have broken away cpim. centre-left parties, though few extreme-left. while few centre-left parties rsp have joined ldf, broke away cpim, cmp , jss, led erstwhile cpim veterans expelled cpim, have joined udf.

the bharathiya janata party (the party leads government of india) active in kerala, not part of either coalition. not have elected parliament , has 1 legislative assembly member , selected members in corporations, several municipal councils , large number of local panchayats, , won record-high 10% of total vote share in kerala in 2014 lok sabha elections.


the aam aadmi party contested 2014 lok sabha elections did not win seats. however, performed in cities, winning 51,517(6.05%) votes in ernakulam, 44,638(4.85%) in thrissur, 14,153(1.62%) in thiruvananthapuram , 13,909(1.48%) in kozhikode.
