during schooling @ st. finbarr s college, foley established himself key member of senior hurling team. in 1984 won harty cup medal following 4-9 2-7 defeat of limerick cbs. game not without incident foley had jaw broken during game. in spite of still lined out in all-ireland decider against st. kieran s college in all-ireland decider on 6 may 1984. foley played faceguard , won all-ireland medal following 1-15 0-8 victory. following secondary schooling in farranferris, attended ucc won 4 fitzgibbon cup medals , 1985, 1986,1987 , 1988. captained ucc freshers team ireland glory in 1985. , selected on combined universities team in 85,86,87,88 , 89.

after success in lower divisional grades argideen rangers, foley key member of carbery divisional team reached second successive championship decider in 1994. midleton, 1 of successful teams of previous decade, provided opposition, however, 3-12 3-6 victory gave foley cork senior hurling championship medal.

two years later in 1996 foley enjoyed major success argideen rangers club. after securing divisional junior title argideen subsequently faced fr. o neill s in county decider. 3-9 0-11 victory, foley scoring 1-2, secured championship.

inter-county

foley first played cork member of minor team on 11 may 1983. introduced substitute in cork s narrow 2-13 1-15 munster semi-final defeat limerick.

after missing 1984 championship due broken jaw, foley following year member of starting fifteen. 1-13 1-8 defeat of tipperary secured centenary year munster medal. wexford provided opposition in subsequent all-ireland decider on 1 september 1985. 3-10 0-12 victory gave him all-ireland minor hurling championship medal.

in 1987 foley late addition cork junior team faced wexford in all-ireland decider on 25 july 1987. narrow 3-11 2-13 victory gave cork victory , secured all-ireland medal foley.

the following foley @ full-forward on cork under-21 team. won munster medal year following 4-12 1-7 defeat of limerick. cork subsequently faced kilkenny in all-ireland decider on 11 september 1988. played in st. brendan s park, birr commemorate centenary of first senior all-ireland final being played there, cork triumphed 4-12 1-5, foley winning all-ireland under-21 hurling championship medal.

after being included , subsequently omitted cork senior panel in 1987 , 1988, foley made senior championship debut on 4 june 1989 in 0-18 apiece munster semi-final draw waterford.

by 1990 foley regular member of starting fifteen. won first munster medal on year after man of match performance in decider. foley s 2-7 contributed 4-16 2-14 defeat of reigning champions tipperary. subsequent all-ireland final on 2 september 1990 pitted cork against galway second time in 4 years. galway once again red-hot favourites , justified tag going 7 points ahead in opening thirty-five minutes masterful display joe cooney. cork fought equally expert display captain tomás mulcahy. game decided on incident occurred midway through second half when cork goalkeeper ger cunningham blocked point-blank shot martin naughton nose. umpires gave no 65-metre free, though deflected out wide. cork went on win high-scoring , open game of hurling 5–15 2–21. victory gave foley all-ireland medal.

cork surrendered titles in 1991, however, foley claimed second munster medal in 1992 following 1-22 3-11 of limerick. on 6 september 1992 cork faced kilkenny in all-ireland decider. @ half-time cork 2 points ahead, however, 2 second-half goals john power , michael titch phelan supplemented first-half d. j. carey penalty gave kilkenny 3-10 1-12 victory.

foley won national hurling league medal in 1993 following 3-11 1-12 defeat of wexford. dropped starting fifteen subsequent championship campaign, move brought end inter-county career, had started busy dental practice in bantry in west cork demanding huge amounts of time.

foley picked munster inter-provincial team in 1988. @ left corner-forward in 4-13 2-11 semi-final defeat connacht.
