joseph goodrich, founder of milton, settled in milton in 1839; built log cabin, since demolished, , brought 1837 cabin site. goodrich seventh-day baptist burned-over district of western new york, , people of faith, known anti-slavery sentiments. goodrich built milton house in 1845, became popular stop travelers due location @ intersection of military road between chicago , madison , road janesville fort atkinson. house s proximity these routes , rock river allowed function stop on underground railroad; fugitive slaves in wisconsin followed river area before taking road racine, boat take them canada. tunnel connects main building nearby cabin; while circumstances in tunnel constructed unknown, joseph s son ezra claimed tunnel used hide runaway slaves. goodrich hosted prominent abolitionist sojourner truth @ house when visited milton in 1860s.


in 1937 house in poor condition, uninhabited, , threatened being demolished. milton historical society acquired , restored building.


the house , cabin open public via guided tours.


milton house declared national historic landmark in 1998. prominent abolitionist site still standing in wisconsin.
