in july, hurricane dennis became strongest storm form prior august , earliest category 4 storm form in caribbean. when hurricane emily reached category 5 intensity later in month, 2005 season became season have 2 hurricanes reach category 4 intensity before end of july; emily broke dennis s nine-day-old record strongest storm on record before august. emily first category 5 hurricane ever recorded in july , earliest 3 weeks (beating hurricane allen). high level of activity , strength reflected in accumulated cyclone energy value @ end of july; @ 63 highest ever.


additionally, 7 storms formed before end of july, breaking record of 5 set in 1887, 1933, 1936, 1959, 1966, , 1995 seasons. 5 of storms formed during july, new record.


late activity

after forming on november 29, hurricane epsilon became longest-lasting december hurricane on record when maintained hurricane strength december 2 december 7. epsilon second-strongest hurricane ever recorded in month of december; hurricane nicole of 1998 stronger.


when tropical storm zeta formed on december 30, came second hurricane alice (also december 30, 1954, later in day) latest ever last storm of season formed. zeta became second storm, after alice, persist through end of year , still active @ start of next.
