in 1880 codd instigated idea of bottle exchange in london. slow start caught on in london , on country. many thousands of empty bottles returned original owners via bottle exchanges. agents charged small fee on each bottle providing service (one penny per each 144 bottles).


dan rylands took on partnership after father s death, , in 1882 patented crystal (valve codd).


on october 6, 1884, codd allowed partner buy him out of business , started trading @ 41 gracechurch street, london.


in february of same year, wife died @ age 54. had 4 surviving children: ada louisa, maud m, edith j, , alfred charles. codd married second wife, elizabeth brundell (whose brother worked firm) in june 1885.


as did not renew of earlier patents, products manufactured without fear of prosecution. examples of these bottles have codd s expired patent embossed on them.
