the flavian amphitheater second of 2 roman amphitheaters built in pozzuoli. smaller , older amphitheater (anfiteatro minore) has been totally destroyed construction of rome naples railway line. dozen arches of earlier work still exist. lesser amphitheater measured 130 x 95 meters (427 x 312 feet).


the site of structure chosen @ nearby crossing of roads naples, capua , cumae. abandoned when partially buried eruptions solfatara volcano. during middle ages, marble used on exterior stripped, interior left alone , preserved. excavations of site performed 1839 1845, 1880 1882, , in 1947.
