west bromwich albion

downing born in taunton, somerset , came through youth system @ west bromwich albion. signed professional contract lasting until june 2012, option of further year in club s favour. made bench 0–0 draw against blackburn in premier league on 24 may 2009.


downing went on one-month loan deal hereford united on 25 january 2010, along west brom teammate lateef elford-alliyu. given squad number 16, , made debut on 2 february in 2–0 win against lincoln city @ edgar street. sent off on final appearance, 5–0 loss eventual league winners notts county on 27 february. made 6 appearances during loan spell.


between november 2010 , april 2011, downing signed on loan 2 successive spells rotherham united , shrewsbury town made no senior appearances either club before returning west brom.


on 3 november 2011 signed on loan league 2 side barnet, on one-month deal. made debut on 8 november in 2–0 win in football league trophy against cheltenham town. on 17 november barnet extended loan deal allow him remain there until 2 january. on 19 january 2012 loan deal extended again allow him remain @ barnet until 28 february. on 29 february loan deal extended again, time until end of season. sent off second time in career during 1–1 draw rotherham on 3 march.


when downing returned west bromwich albion @ end of 2011–12 season club announced not offering him new contract. on 24 may 2012, downing released after 3 years @ club, having never made appearance first team.


walsall

on 1 august 2012, downing signed league 1 team walsall. made debut on 1 september in 2–2 draw against brentford.


milton keynes dons

on 27 june 2016, after declining new contract walsall, downing joined fellow league 1 side milton keynes dons on free transfer, signing two-year deal. downing made league debut club on 6 august 2016, in 0–1 away win against shrewsbury town.


on 31 august 2017, downing joined fellow league 1 club blackburn rovers on season-long loan.
