fiesta utsa, annual event held in april, began in 1978. first fiesta utsa attended on 1,000 students , included music, jalapeño eating contest, watermelon seed spitting contest, dunk tank, , other activities. fiesta utsa features dozens of booths set under sombrilla in carnival atmosphere. booths run registered student organizations , offer food, drinks , games. campus activities board sponsors bands , other musicians throughout day. fiesta utsa became kickoff event fiesta san antonio each spring, having been added official fiesta san antonio schedule in 1980. fiesta royalty present @ ribbon-cutting ceremony marks official beginning of fiesta. best fest, annual celebration held in october, began in 1978 (as bestfest ) special salute 5 of state s outstanding festivals, including new braunfels s wurstfest, corpus christi s buccaneer days, san antonio s fiesta, texas state fair in dallas, , george washington s birthday celebration in laredo. presented student organization variety 79. in 1979, event said salute 5 of city s outstanding festivals: fiesta navidena, king william fair, la feria del rio, san antonio stock show , rodeo, , texas folklife festival. in late 1970s, best fest included performances utsa brass ensemble , utsa jazz ensemble, several contests such jalapeño eating contest, egg toss, walking plank contest, pee wee bicycle races, , others. modern best fest incorporates halloween theme costume , booth-decorating contests.
