csun fields 19 teams @ ncaa division level. csun fields both men s , women s teams in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, indoor , outdoor track , field, , volleyball. csun has baseball , softball , fields women s teams in beach volleyball, tennis , water polo. due state , university budget deficits, csun dropped football following 2001 season. football team cost university $1 million year , had little fan support. csun dropped men s , women s swimming in 2010 due statewide , campus budget crisis. csun 1 of 45 schools in nation has beach volleyball program.

csun moved division in 1990. before moving up, university won 34 national titles @ division ii level still ranks third time. csun member of big sky conference 1996-2001. have been member of big west conference ever since sports. men s , women s indoor track , field teams , men s volleyball team compete in mountain pacific sports federation instead.

since moving division csun has produced 2 ncaa national runner-up teams: men s volleyball team in 1993 , softball team in 1994. matadors softball team has appeared in 2 women s college world series in 1993 , 1994, advancing title game in 1994 before falling arizona. in 2010 men s volleyball team spent several weeks number 1 ranked team in nation , made final 4 lost penn state in semi-final match.

the men s basketball team has made ncaa tournament 2 times in 2001 , 2009. team made 3 big sky championship games in 1997, 2000 , 2001. csun beat eastern washington in 2001 advance first ncaa tournament. csun seeded 13th , lost fourth seed kansas in round of 64. csun has played in 2 big west championship games in 2004 , 2009. csun beat pacific in 2009, , seeded 15th in ncaa tournament , lost second seed memphis.

the women s basketball team won big west championship first time in 2014. 16th seed in ncaa tournament , lost first seed south carolina.

csun men s soccer reached 3rd round of 2006 ncaa tournament, knocking out big west conference rival uc santa barbara in 2nd round.

the women s track , field team won 6 straight big west titles 2006 2011. men s track , field team has won 3 big west titles in 2007, 2009 , 2010.

the men s , women s basketball , volleyball teams play in 1,600 seat matadome located in redwood hall.

csun s sports teams known matadors. in 1958 student vote chose school colors red , white , matadors school mascot on 158 nominations possible nicknames. matadors elected on 4 other finalists apollos, falcons, rancheros , titans.
