coptic name given stage of language @ time of christianisation. survived medieval period, 16th century dwindling rapidly due persecution of coptic christians under mamluks. survived in egyptian countryside spoken language several centuries after that. coptic survives liturgical language of coptic orthodox church of alexandria , coptic catholic church.
