War with Brandenburg Duchy of Pomerania



during reign of otto i, margrave of brandenburg , son of albert of brandenburg (1100–1170), brandenburg claimed sovereignty on pomerania. yet, in 1181, holy roman emperor frederick invested duke bogislaw of griffin house of pomerania duchy of slavia (pomerania). not accepted margraviate of brandenburg , triggered several military conflicts.


between 1185 , 1227, pomerania along of southern baltic coast remained under sovereignty of denmark. however, brandenburg again tried gain sovereignty on pomerania, , in 1214 short time conquered stettin. after denmark lost battle of bornhoeved in 1227, denmark lost territories on southern baltic shore, including pomerania.


at time, duchy of pomerania co-ruled duke wartislaw iii of demmin , duke barnim of stettin. after danes retreated, brandenburg took chance , invaded pomerania-demmin. in 1231, holy roman emperor frederick ii gave duchy, again part of empire, fief ascanian margraves of brandenburg.


denmark attempted restore rule , took wolgast , demmin in 1235, driven out same year. wartislaw had accept brandenburg s overlordship in 1236 treaty of kremmen, furthermore had hand on of duchy brandenburg immediately, burg stargard land , adjacted areas (all become part of mecklenburg, forming bulk of later mecklenburg-strelitz area). circipania lost mecklenburg in years before.


in 1250 treaty of landin between pomeranian dukes , margraves of brandenburg, barnim managed reassert rule of griffin house on pomerania, lost uckermark brandenburg.


brandenburg since 1250 expanded eastward. in 1250–52, margraves gained half of lebus land, including terra küstrin between warthe , mietzel (myśla), , terra chinz north of mietzel river, both held barnim. in course of 1250s, margraves further gained castellanies zantoch , driesen except burghs itself, of both castellanies belonging greater poland, barnim had held northern parts. in 1261, barnim lost soldin area, , in following years terra zehden brandenburg.


in 1264, duke wartislaw iii of demmin died, cousin barnim (the good) became sole ruler of duchy. in 1266, barnim married mechthild, daughter of otto iii, margrave of brandenburg.


in 1269, barnim lost terra arnswalde margraves. before death, bought western part in 1278.


bogislaw iv lost bernstein area , zinnenburg land (terra arnhausen , terra schivelbein), in 1280. former pomeranian territories east of oder lost brandenburg in 13th century became parts of brandenburgian neumark ( new march ).
