the company established in 1948 british road services (brs). road transport company formed nationalisation of britain s road haulage industry, under british transport commission, result of transport act 1947.
from 1963 company administered transport holding company , had 4 main operating areas: british road services, brs parcels, pickfords , containerway & roadferry.
on 1 january 1969 renamed national freight corporation. on same date 51% share in freightliner transferred british railways board (brb). transferred brb on 1 august 1978.
in 1980 assets of national freight corporation transferred national freight company. in 1982, company sold employees national freight consortium in 1 of first privatisations of state-owned industry. new company first listed on london stock exchange in 1989 , subsequently became nfc plc.
brs parcels rebranded roadline , sold in management buy-out lynx express in 1997. nfc disposed of pickfords in 1999 allied van lines.
in 2000 company merged ocean group plc form exel plc.
