in january 1976 band took break live performances prepare recording @ plaza sound studio. sessions began in february 1976 , completed within week $6,400; instruments took 3 days , vocal parts recorded in 4 days. in 2004, leon admitted recorded ramones due budget restrictions, time needed.

the band applied microphone placement techniques similar many orchestras used. recording process deliberate exaggeration of techniques used beatles in 1960s, four-track representation of devices. guitars can heard separately on stereo channels—electric bass on left channel, rhythm guitar on right—drums , vocals mixed in middle of stereo mix. mixing of production used more modern techniques such overdubbing, technique used studios add supplementary recorded sound material. band used technique known doubling, vocal line used sung twice.


recording album expanded mickey leigh (joey s brother) , leon percussion effects, went unmentioned in liner notes album s release. author nicholas rombes said production s quality sounded ultimate do-it-yourself, amateur, reckless ethic associated punk, concluded approached recording process high degree of preparedness , professionalism.
