1940s

1948 unimog original logo on hood


1946 – first prototype

unimogs developed in post-war germany used agricultural equipment. unimog designed equal-sized wheels, mounting bracket in front, hitch in rear, , loading space in center. make multi-purpose vehicle farmers use in field , on highway.


albert friedrich designed first model , entered production agreement erhard und söhne (erhard , sons) in schwäbisch gmünd.


development began on january 1, 1946. first prototype ready end of 1946. prototype equipped gasoline engine, because development of om636 diesel engine had not been finished. prototype looked unimogs built later. original track width of 1.270 metres (4 ft 2.0 in) equivalent 2 potato rows.


1947 – production

the 25-hp (19 kw) om636 daimler-benz diesel engine became standard equipment in first production unimogs @ end of 1947. original symbol unimog pair of ox s horns in shape of letter u. first 600 70200 series unimogs built boehringer. 2 reasons: erhard und soehne did not have capacity build unimogs , mercedes benz not permitted build all-wheel drive vehicles @ time.

1951 – daimler-benz – gaggenau manufacturing plant

after daimler-benz took on manufacture of unimog in 1951, (unimog 2010) three-pointed mercedes star began appear on front of vehicle , replaced unimog ox horn symbol. new model became known series 401.


a new series 402 long wheelbase chassis (2,120 mm (83 in) instead of 1,720 mm (68 in)) became available.


the vehicles began manufactured in gaggenau, in baden-württemberg. production continued there until 2002.


1953 – closed cab

1955 – 404 s


unimog 404 serial number 4 - 1955 - common body style , configuration


in 1955, first unimog 404 s series produced. primary customer of 404 s bundeswehr (literally federal defense, i.e. west german armed forces), created in mid-1950s in era of cold war.


the 404 intended mobile cross-country truck, instead of agricultural implement. 404 s popularly produced variant. 64,242 produced between 1955 , 1980. 1 of oldest 404s known exist 1955 serial number 4, located in orange county, california.


1957

the unimog equipped synchronized transmission allowing easy gear changes while @ speed. 1 of first agricultural vehicles equipped.


1960s

1971 model unimog 406, zweiwegefahrzeug ( railway two-way vehicle or road–rail vehicle used rail car shunting rail car mover)


the 406/416 middle series produced beginning in 1963. equipped four-cylinder diesel (om312) producing 65 ps (48 kw). 406 , 416 similar, 416 having longer 2,900 mm (110 in) wheelbase compared 2,380 mm (94 in) 406. later models equipped direct injection om352 diesel engines starting 80 ps (59 kw) , going 110 ps (81 kw).


between original unimog , middle series, daimler-benz developed light series 421/403. later supplemented 413 line. differ wheelbase , engine power. 421 has 2,380 mm (94 in) wheelbase , 403 has 2,250 mm (89 in) wheelbase. new engines come passenger car line (421/u of 40 ps (29 kw) 2.2-litre capacity), , benz truck line (403/u of 54 ps (40 kw) 4.8-litre capacity).


the 100,000th unimog built in 1966 in gaggenau.


argentina first country manufacture unimog outside germany. first unimog produced in mercedes-benz argentina s.a. factory in gonzalez catán, in outskirts of buenos aires city, rolled off assembly line on september 1st, 1968

1970s
1972 – mb trac


mb trac farm tractor equal sized wheels


the unimog quite successful, except intended agricultural platform. daimler-benz produced new vehicle in 1972, mb trac more oriented larger scale mechanical farming. new tractor crossed unimog technology of all-wheel drive , power transmission 4 large equal-sized wheels, appearance of tractor: slim hood, behind angular, highly rising driver cab. in contrast conventional tractors cab situated between axles, similar large four-wheel-drive tractors. there no articulation between front , rear sections larger tractors.


from initial mb-trac 65 , mb-trac 70 (later 700) broad platform developed heavy-duty mt-trac 1800 within few years, though mb-trac not huge success. daimler-benz later merged mb-trac agricultural machinery activities of deutz ag. manufacturing of mb-trac series ended in 1991.


1974 – heavy series

in 1974, new u 120 of heavy series 425 daimler-benz, extended unimog available models additional heavy line. new, angular cab remarkable large, forward hood sloping nose. hood flows down in wide, black grille. appearance of driving cab remains unchanged in principle in 2006, more 1 quarter century later.


the series 425 have 2,810 millimetres (111 in) wheelbase , 9 tons permissible total weight 120 ps (88 kw) (shortly thereafter 125 ps (92 kw) u 125).


1975 – series 435

manufacture of series 435 bundeswehr (german defense force) began in 1975, successor of unimog s 404. 435 characterized long wheelbase of 3,250 mm (128 in), 3,700 mm (150 in) or 3,850 mm (152 in).


1976 – unimog models renamed

unimog u 1300 municipal truck in rēzekne, latvia


the new angular 424 middle series of unimogs produced starting 1976. designated u 1000, u 1300/l, u 1500, , flagship u 1700/l 124 kw (168 hp) engine performance.


in same period daimler-benz re-ordered type designations older series. classical round form series of mercedes benz unimog designated u 600/l, u 800/l, u 900 , u 1100/l. (the letter l stands long wheelbase, because models available in 2 wheelbase variants.)


the unimog rounded driving cab became known light series. new series angular cab divided payload middle , heavy series. engines overlap – unimog nomenclature not simple understand (see below notes on series names).


the long-proven unimog-s (404), although decreasing number of items, single remaining benziner (i.e. engine consuming gasoline/petrol, not diesel fuel) in lineup.

introduction of new light models 408 (u90) , 418 (u110-u140) newly designed cabins replace predecessor models. new diagonal front portion gives operator overview forward. asymmetric front hood, lower on driver s side, permits best overview of connections , attachments. new framework , progressively working coil springs improve handling unimog. re-arranged cab high roof offers more space previously, distinct controls, , not least, friendly workplace. among technical characteristics new unimog are: tire pressure adjustment system can operated while driving, anti-skid system, new engines passenger car range u 90 of easy series rank servolock , mechanism hydraulic connection of implements.


1993 – u2450

the culmination of 1993 program unimog u 2450 l 6×6, all-wheel-driven 3 axle truck. engine performance increased tenfold new top model compared original unimog. unimog club in gaggenau brought being.


1994 – funmog

mercedes benz built twelve examples of funmog luxury extras such leather seats , carpets. expensive unimog, prices starting @ dm150,000.


1996 – ux100

introduction of small model ux100. designed slip speedily on sidewalks , park plants. sold off after few years of production hako specialize in vehicles of kind , size.


2000s

the all-new range of models (ugn/405: u300/u400/u500) introduced in 2000.


in 2003 production transferred gaggenau wörth rhein mercedes-benz-lkw-montagewerk, largest truck manufacturing plant in europe. u3000-u5000 models (437.4) introduced in 2003


at dubai motor show in december 2005, unimog u 500 black edition premiered offering wealthy desert-dwellers. similar luxury offering comparable funmog.


starting june 2006 ugn series produced bluetec technology future exhaust limit euro iv requirements met. new packaging of vehicle , new design designations connected (old design +1, e.g. 405.100 becomes 405.101)


at iaa 2006 commercial vehicle show in hanover new unimog u 20 presented, available @ end of 2007. striking feature cabover design no vestigial front hood characteristic of traditional unimog. has total weight of 7.5 8.5 metric tons. underlying technology comes u 300. driving cab new brazilian accelo light truck (caminhões leves) series. wheelbase shortened 2,700 mm (110 in).


2010s

since august 2013, production of new models started @ wörth factory. these models feature redesigned cabins , new engines meet euro vi emission standards.
