during mexican enlightenment, science can divided 4 periods: period (from 1735 1767), creole period (from 1768 1788), official or spanish period (from 1789 1803) , period of synthesis (from 1804 beginning of mexican independence movement in 1810).


during 16th , 17th centuries, modern science developed in europe lagged behind in mexico. new ideas developed in science in europe not important in mexico. 1767 expulsion of jesuits, had introduced new ideas in mexico, helped antagonize creoles , promoted national feelings among mexicans. after expulsion, self-taught creoles first scientists in mexico. later on, joined spanish scientists, , did research, teaching, publishing, , translating texts. ideas of francis bacon , rené descartes freely discussed @ seminars, caused scholasticism lose strength. during mexican enlightenment, mexico made progress in science. progress made in subjects such astronomy, engineering, etc. in 1792 seminary of mining established. later became college of mining, in first modern physics laboratory in mexico established.


famous scientists of enlightenment included josé antonio de alzate y ramírez , andrés manuel del río. río discovered chemical element vanadium in 1801.
