james w. robinson bought rights bulletin, , developed newspaper known honolulu star-bulletin. in 1888 hawaiian gazette company bought pacific commercial advertiser, whitney managed until 1894. year later, advertiser got first linotype machine. lorrin a. thurston bought advertiser in 1895, family own until 1992.


active until end, whitney edited planter s monthly until april 1903.


he died @ home on august 17, 1904. buried in oahu cemetery in honolulu.
