riots defined race have taken place between ethnic groups in united states since pre-revolution era of 18th century. during early-to-mid- 19th centuries, violent rioting occurred between protestant nativists , arrived irish catholic immigrants. these reached heights during peak of immigration in 1840s , 1850s in cities including new york, philadelphia, , boston. during 20th century, riots common against irish , french-canadian immigrants in providence, rhode island.


the san francisco vigilance movements of 1851 , 1856 have been described responses rampant crime , government corruption. but, since late 20th century, historians have noted vigilantes had nativist bias; systematically attacked irish immigrants, , later mexicans, chileans came miners during california gold rush, , chinese immigrants. during 20th century, racial or ethnic violence directed whites against filipinos, japanese , armenians in california, had arrived in waves of immigration.


during late 19th century , 20th century, italian immigrants subject racial violence. in 1891, eleven italians lynched mob of thousands in new orleans. in 1890s total of twenty italians lynched in south. anti-polish violence occurred in same time period.
