pile s mother , or father apparently did not appreciate shipbuilding disposition , preferred him work in ropery. employment did not last long, ended engagement running away after 6 weeks. family must have relented recorded served time shipwright father.


in 1836, pile s family moved stockton-on-tees. @ age of 18, accident caused right hand cut in two; crippled him great extent rest of life. on recovery, went shipbuilder in monkwearmouth complete apprenticeship. there talent recognised; promoted foreman , in charge of yard large number of men.


he continued relations until 1848 when left yard commence on own account. when brother moved hartlepool, in 1853, william took whole of establishment.
