history
early career (1990–1994)

at gates formed in 1990 former members of death/black metal band grotesque. recorded debut ep, gardens of grief, dolores record label. ep led seminal metal label peaceville records sign band, , released debut full-length album, red in sky ours in 1992.

after recording of second studio album, fear kiss burning darkness, founding member , guitarist alf svensson left band in 1993 pursue tattoo artistry, graphic novel illustration , solo electronic-opera-black metal project oxiplegatz. replaced former house of usher guitarist martin larsson, band knew underground tape trading. band continued touring europe, , filmed headbangers ball special feature in nottingham, uk in july 1993.

success , breakthrough (1994–1996)

in 1994, @ gates released third album, terminal spirit disease, hailed breakthrough album.

the band continued touring , in 1995 released commercially , critically successful album: slaughter of soul, on earache records. album regarded strongest death metal effort, compared previous albums. album firmly rooted band 1 of leaders of swedish metal scene, gothenburg sound of melodic death metal. band received international attention album, gaining them several u.s. tours , heavy rotation of music video blinded fear on mtv in america, despite international success, björler brothers departed in 1996. remaining members decided impossible continue without them, band broke up.

post-breakup (1996–2007)

when @ gates broke in 1996, drummer adrian erlandsson, bassist jonas björler, , guitarist anders björler formed haunted. tomas lindberg went on working different bands including skitsystem, crown, lock up, , nightrage. erlandsson left haunted in 1999 join cradle of filth. in 2001, peaceville records released @ gates retrospective called suicidal final art.

reunion (2007–2014)

on october 18, 2007, @ gates announced several reunion shows mid-2008, including getafe electric festival, roskilde festival, ruisrock, wacken open air, graspop metal meeting, sweden rock festival, gods of metal, hellfest summer open air , bloodstock open air, tour of japan dillinger escape plan, eternity, pig destroyer, , mayhem in may 2008.

anders björler commented on reunion:

on band s official website, björler declared pointless release more ten years after slaughter of soul , disappoint people.

when asked in october 2007 if band planning on writing new album, lindberg replied:

throughout july 2008, toured , canada on dubbed suicidal final tour , , played final uk show @ bloodstock open air on sunday on 17 august 2008. finished last show in athens, greece, guest ocean on 21 september 2008.

the band s performance @ wacken open air in 2008 available on flames of end dvd boxed set, includes clips of songs other venues , documentary covers history of band in entirety.

in december 2010, band announced second reunion in hometown (gothenburg, sweden), plans perform @ metaltown 2011. later month, announced perform @ bloodstock open air in derbyshire, england.

on january 29, 2012, @ gates announced on official facebook page doing more reunion shows in 2012. appeared @ brutal assault , vagos open air festivals in august, , resurrection fest in spain. appeared on board barge hell sailed out of miami in december.

in october 2012, tomas lindberg stated not never possibility of @ gates recording again.

the band confirmed reunion appearances in 2013, including sweden rock festival in solvesborg , heavy mtl in montreal.

at war reality (2014–2016)

on january 21, 2014, @ gates released video on youtube showing distorted video lines of text on it, followed text saying 2014 , possibly hinting toward possible lyrics upcoming album. on january 27, band revealed on facebook via new cover photo , profile picture, confirmed fifth record titled, @ war reality , released in fall of 2014 through century media.

asked whether @ war reality @ gates final album or if band continue recording, tomas lindberg replied, can t really. have no plans of stopping ve broken promises before s best not anything. in numerous recent interviews members of band have expressed interest in doing follow-up album.

at gates concluded touring cycle @ war reality in august 2016 festival appearance @ elb riot in hamburg, germany.

departure of anders björler , sixth studio album (2017–present)

on 8 march, 2017 in official statement released band, announced anders björler had departed band. despite anders departure, went on confirm working on follow-up studio album 2014 s @ war reality, aiming record , release in 2018. in september 2017, jonas stålhammar announced new guitarist take place of björler on permanent basis , feature on new album. entered studio begin recording new album in november 2017, , expected last until 2018, after album expected released in first half of 2018.
