white hall, on 29 maraval road, largest residence on road. called rosenweg, built joseph leon agostini, cocoa planter, based upon design plans. agostini s family corsica, , influence reflected in house s moorish mediterranean inspired architecture. construction began in 1904, james moore of barbados, , took 3 years complete project, except roof not completed until 1910. exterior built using white limestone barbados. three-storied building 4 reception halls, library, drawing room, wine cellars, , large galleries. there 6 bedroom suites large dressing rooms , advanced, modern bathrooms. house had long corridors, wide-sweeping marble staircases, , service lift between floors.


agostini died in 1906, family occupied house until unable make payments on mortgage , foreclosed william gordon grant in 1910, according national trust. believe agostinis never lived in white hall, because cocoa industry, strong when construction began, collapsed while house being built.


an american, robert henderson, purchased house , renamed white hall, coral stone exterior of building. national trust states added delightful variety in furnishings of interior added refined dignity of exterior. henderson s heirs, seigert family, possessed house until world war ii, when commandeered united states forces air raid precaution headquarters. rented use cultural centre british council in 1944.


although returned hendersons after war, never lived in again. rented number of purposes—including public libraries, national archives, , government broadcasting unit—until 1949. not used again until purchased government of trinidad , tobago in 1954. used pre-federal interim government in 1957, before formation in 1958 of west indies federation. hon. dr. eric williams, trinidad , tobago s first prime minister, used office of prime minister 1963 2009. during time, there restoration of building in 2000. listed heritage site , protected under national trust act. beginning 2008, urban development corporation (udecott) renovated building used visiting foreign dignitaries.
