three out of 6 intense atlantic hurricanes (by central pressure) on record occurred in 2005, topped off hurricane wilma s 882 mbar (26.0 inhg) minimum pressure, shattering 17-year-old record set hurricane gilbert. hurricanes emily, katrina , rita attained category 5 intensity, , hurricanes rita , katrina became fourth- , sixth-most intense recorded atlantic storms, respectively. hurricane emily not recorded category 5 storm, upgraded post-storm status national hurricane center. 2005 season season on record 4 category 5 storms on saffir-simpson hurricane scale; previous record two. in addition, hurricane dennis reached category 4 status, tying record set 1999 season 5 category 4 storms.
