the race consisted of single twenty-lap (50-mile) green flag sprint no pit stops required. caution flag laps not count.
1991–1997
the race broken 2 ten-lap, green flag segments. field inverted second ten-lap segment. prize money awarded both segments positions. race broken 2 segments because had been lacking competitiveness since restrictor plates introduced in 1988. inversion rule added needed excitement event, popularity continued wane.
1998–2000
the event renamed bud shootout, , consisted of 2 25-lap (62.5-mile) races, bud shootout qualifier @ 11 am, , bud shootout @ 12 pm. 1 two-tire pit stop required each race. winner of qualifier advanced main event.
2001–2002
the event renamed budweiser shootout , expanded new distance, 70 laps (175 miles). caution laps counted, finish had under green, truck series green-white-checker rule used if necessary. minimum of 1 two-tire green flag pit stop required. bud shootout qualifier discontinued because second round qualifying cup races had been eliminated.
2003–2008
the race broken 2 segments: 20-lap segment, followed ten-minute intermission, concluding 50-lap second segment. while pit stop no longer required rule, reduction in fuel cell size (from 22 gallons 13.5 gallons) made fuel stop necessary. (in 2007, fuel cells expanded 18.5 gallons.) many drivers changed 2 tires during fuel stop, time required fuel car allowed two-tire change without additional delay.
2009–2012
the first segment expanded 25 laps, followed 50-lap second segment. total race distance 75 laps (187.5 miles).
2013–2015
the race divided 3 segments (30 laps, 25 laps, 20-laps), online fan voting deciding aspects of race specifics (lengths of segments, requirements mandatory pit stops, number of drivers eliminated, etc.) total race distance 75 laps (187.5 miles). 2013, vote resulted in mandatory four-tire pit stop, , no cars eliminated. 2014, voting set starting lineup per final practice speeds , required mandatory pit stops after second segment.
