the school s campus , buildings, after 1990 closure, sat vacant several years. city of phoenix obtained land in 1996 in land exchange involved barron collier company , federal government. barron collier established $35 million trust fund native american children, , city converted campus steele indian school park, opened in 2001.


the 3 nrhp-listed buildings , large pond make landmark core. park s design pays homage site s native american history. many of design elements reflect native american concepts of life, earth , universe.


the 75-acre park includes 2.5 acres (1.0 ha) bird lake, outdoor amphitheater seating 1,500 people, 15 acres (6.1 ha) entry garden featuring desert native plants , native american poems in ramps, 30 acres (12 ha) phoenix green shady oasis area meandering walkways, , 15 acres (6.1 ha) neighborhood park recreation, sports, , picnicing features.
