several other public transport companies existed prior creation of stm. 1861 1886, montreal city passenger railway company operated small network of horse-drawn trams (also called streetcars in north america).


then in 1886, company changed name montreal street railway company. first electric tram appeared in 1892 , nicknamed rocket. company underwent name change in 1893: mstr became mtr montreal island beltline railway. year later, network electrified , in 1894, last horse-drawn tram taken out of service. 1910 1911 company renamed montreal public service corporation before changing again montreal tramways company.


although put service in 1919, buses began used starting in 1925, creation of several regular lines. in 1937, first trolley buses used. in 1939, company had 929 trams, 224 buses , 7 trolley buses, serving 200 million passengers per year. replacement of tram lines buses began in 1951, when law passed provincial government transferred overall management of transport in montreal public organization, commission de transport de montréal (ctm). last tram withdrawn service in 1959.


the metro inaugurated in 1966 , same year saw end of trolley bus service.


the ctm became commission de transport de la communauté urbaine de montréal (ctcum) in january 1970, , in 1985, rebranded again becoming société de transport de la communauté urbaine de montréal (stcum). commuter trains ceased managed stcum in 1996 , responsibility service transferred newly created agence métropolitaine de transport.


it not until 2002, @ time of time of merger of montreal other municipalities on island of montreal société de transport de montreal created, taking place of stcum.

from 1861 1959, montreal had extensive streetcar system. streetcar network had beginnings horsecar era of montreal city passenger railway in 1861. private company become montreal street railway in 1886 , montreal tramways company in 1911. assets of company taken on city-owned montreal transportation commission in 1951.


regional transit service

the stm formerly involved in operation of regional transit services. first such service set of bus routes inherited october 1980 expropriation of private bus company called metropolitan provincial (1967) inc. these regional bus routes operated downtown montreal western part of island of montreal, off-island points located west, south-west, , north east of island of montreal. end of 1985, stm (then known initials ctcum) had exited regional bus business focus on core territory (the island of montreal). of regional bus routes passed private operators provided services under contract newly formed intermunicipal transit councils.


the second regional service involved management of 2 commuter train lines. on july 1, 1982, ctcum , canadian national railway (cn) entered agreement integrate montreal-deux montagnes commuter train line regular ctcum bus , metro network. ctcum paid cn staff, run, , maintain trains, while set fares , schedules. passengers travelling within ctcum operating territory able transfer between trains , bus or metro, no fare supplement required make bus/metro train transfer . on october 1, 1982, similar agreement canadian pacific railway (cp) went effect , cp s montreal-rigaud commuter train line integrated ctcum network.


on january 1, 1996, responsibility commuter trains transferred agence métropolitaine de transport (amt) (now rtm), quebec provincial government agency formed coordinate public transportation in metropolitan montreal region.
