welles stayed on @ universal direct (and co-star with) charlton heston in 1958 film touch of evil, based on whit masterson s novel badge of evil. hired actor, welles promoted director universal studios @ insistence of charlton heston. film reunited many actors , technicians whom welles had worked in hollywood in 1940s, including cameraman russell metty (the stranger), makeup artist maurice seiderman (citizen kane), , actors joseph cotten, marlene dietrich , akim tamiroff. filming proceeded smoothly, welles finishing on schedule , on budget, , studio bosses praising daily rushes. nevertheless, after end of production, studio re-edited film, re-shot scenes, , shot new exposition scenes clarify plot. welles wrote 58-page memo outlining suggestions , objections, stating film no longer version—it studio s, such, still prepared it.


in 1978, longer preview version of film discovered , released.


as universal reworked touch of evil, welles began filming adaptation of miguel de cervantes novel don quixote in mexico, starring mischa auer quixote , akim tamiroff sancho panza.
