adriano made first international appearance brazil in world cup qualifier against colombia on november 15, 2000 @ age of 18. considered long-term successor ronaldo. scored first international goal on june 11, 2003 in friendly match against nigeria. later month, included in brazil team 2003 fifa confederations cup. led brazil s attack alongside ronaldinho in absence of ronaldo. appeared in 3 matches , scored 2 goals brazil eliminated in group stage. missed 2004 conmebol men pre-olympic tournament due injuries.


the following year, included in brazil team copa américa 2004. brazil won cup , adriano won golden boot competition s leading scorer 7 goals. in final match against argentina, adriano dramatically scored equalizer in 93rd minute. match went on penalties , brazil won 4–2. after match, coach carlos alberto parreira singled out adriano important factor in winning title.


in 2005, adriano once again had impressive tournament brazil, time in 2005 fifa confederations cup. adriano named player of tournament , received golden boot award competition s leading scorer 5 goals. in final, steered brazil victory, scoring 2 goals in 4–1 victory on argentina.


adriano called 2006 fifa world cup, scoring first goal on june 18, 2006 in 2–0 win against australia , second in 3–0 victory against ghana. despite 2 goals, adriano s world cup campaign considered disappointment, managed 5 shots tournament, while brazil whole unable find right mix between defence , attack, being eliminated in quarter-finals france.


after disappointing world cup, adriano s international career declined due series of poor club performances , personal problems. adriano has featured once brazil under dunga s regime since conclusion of world cup, halftime substitute during 2–0 friendly loss portugal on february 6, 2007. in 2008, adriano regained form during stint @ são paulo fc , earned recall national team. on october 10, 2008, adriano scored first international goal in 2 years in world cup qualifier against venezuela. regular member of brazil squad during world cup qualification, , brought team s last friendly prior 2010 fifa world cup against republic of ireland. however, adriano 1 of 2 players dropped final 23-men squad coach dunga, along carlos eduardo (who had replaced injured elano against ireland). backup of injured luís fabiano on ireland game, grafite, instead occupied adriano s place. adriano left out of backup player list.
