the kerala state emblem derivative version of royal coat of arms of kingdom of travancore. state emblem symbolises 2 elephants guarding imperial shanku in imperial crest. imperial counch crest or shanku imperial insignia of lord sree padmanabha (a form of lord vishnu)- national deity of travancore. shanku considered 1 of common emblems of majority of kerala feudal kingdoms. kingdom of cochin , zamorin s malabar had counch state emblems. when kingdoms of cochin , travancore merged in 1949, brief period, crest carried wheel or chakra in centre shanku on top of it. accession of malabar travancore-cochin, state of kerala formed in 1957. during time, royal coat of arms of travancore kingdom modified placing lion capital of ashoka on top of imperial conch. travancore royal family uses erstwhile royal coat of arms of travancore today, whereas sree padmanabhaswamy temple of trivandrum uses imperial conch crest coat of arms.


the state animal of kerala elephant , government emblem has 2 elephants in it. state bird great indian hornbill (ml:മലമ്പുഴക്കി വേഴാമ്പല്‍),the state flower golden shower (ml:കണിക്കൊന്ന) , state tree coconut , state fish pearlspot or karimeen (കരിമീന്‍‌).
