the emancipation proclamation executive order issued president abraham lincoln on january 1, 1863. in single stroke changed legal status, recognized u.s. government, of 3 million slaves in designated areas of confederacy slave free. had practical effect slave escaped control of confederate government, running away or through advances of federal troops, slave became legally , free. owners never compensated. plantation owners, realizing emancipation destroy economic system, moved slaves far possible out of reach of union army. june 1865, union army controlled of confederacy , liberated of designated slaves.


about 200,000 free blacks , former slaves served in union army , navy, providing basis claim full citizenship. severe dislocations of war , reconstruction had severe negative impact on black population, large amount of sickness , death.
