many of gtu s constituent seminaries established @ various locations throughout bay area in 20th or late 19th centuries. because of foundation of university of california, several of them relocated berkeley , established cooperative relationships university. in wake of formation of world council of churches , second vatican council, bay area seminaries began negotiations form cooperative degree program. in 1962, agreement between berkeley baptist divinity school (now american baptist seminary of west), episcopalian church divinity school of pacific, pacific lutheran theological seminary , san francisco theological seminary enabled incorporation of graduate theological union in 1962. in 1964, pacific school of religion, st. albert s college (now dominican school of philosophy , theology , starr king school ministry joined gtu consortium. in 1966, alma college relocated berkeley , renamed jesuit school of theology @ berkeley. in 1968, franciscan school of theology moved berkeley santa barbara , joined gtu consortium, although in 2013 merged university of san diego, leaving consortium , relocating oceanside, california . 1971, gtu accredited association of theological schools.

in 1969, gtu common library established , individual libraries of seminaries merged 1 collection. in 1970s, construction began on louis i. kahn-designed building house gtu library. main library building completed in 1987 , named flora lamson hewlett library in honor of hewlett foundation.

the dean of gtu chief academic officer. dean chairs gtu s council of deans composed of academic deans of consortial member schools. traditionally, deans have held john dillenberger professorship in general field of specialization. fifith dean, margaret miles, john dillenberger professor of historical theology while sixth dean, arthur holder, john dillenberger professor of christian spirituality.
